PROTECTING OUR HERITAGE
Today I spoke in the adjournment debate on defending our cultural heritage, particularly the statues we have put up to commemorate our heroes such as Winston Churchill.
Churchill and the Churchillian spirit symbolises why many people are proud to be British and there are activists who are seeking desperately to tear down his statues and redefine his legacy. We must not allow this to happen. If they are allowed to do this to him what is to stop them attacking all aspects of our heritage. I personally believe that the way in which Churchill College in Cambridge have recently dealt with his legacy is disgraceful and Churchill College should hang their heads in shame.
Currently Sadiq Khan and his statue commission are reviewing our historic statues in London. I wanted to make it clear that the reason I was speaking in this debate as a Suffolk MP was because this is not just a local London issue. London is our nation’s capital, and the heritage of London is the heritage of our nation. So despite being criticised by local Labour councillors for getting involved in this debate about memorials and statues in London, I will continue to do so and make no apology for it.
We saw this week that the Labour party were ridiculing the increase in sentencing for the criminal damage of our war memorials and statues in the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill. It is clear to me that they have ceased to be a patriotic party – you are more likely to see its leader, Sir Kier Starmer, literally on his knees apologising for our country’s past and heritage rather than proudly standing up for it!
I am very glad that the Government is taking this issue seriously. I agree with Minister Pincher that Sir Kier Starmer is unable to stand up to Sadiq Khan. He certainly is a “POW” – Prisoner of Woke.
