Controlling Immigration
Over the past few weeks immigration has been a key topic of discussion on the door step.Â
My view is that immigration has brought many benefits to this country. The vast majority of the people who move to our country and make it their home make a positive contribution and enrich our country and Town.
However, its also my view that we need to have the ability to control immigration. Being a member of the European Union makes it impossible for immigration to be controlled because of freedom of movement. Based on the conversations that I’ve had across Town, my view is that the majority of people in Ipswich are pro immigration but would like it to be controlled.
Ultimately I believe it was the desire for our country to be able to control immigration that was a key reason why people voted to leave the EU. It was one of the reasons I voted to leave. Wanting to control immigration does not mean you’re anti immigration. I want the brightest and the best to come to our country to make it their home wherever they come from. The sole question should be, “To what extent does the person in question bring something to the table” when it comes to the potential contribution they will make to our country.
It is for this reason that when we leave the EU, the Prime Minister has pledged to introduce an Australian type points based system. This will ensure that we will finally have the ability to control immigration. On the other hand the Labour Party have committed to maintaining and extending freedom of movement, completely ignoring the referendum result.
Jeremy Corbyn will hold a second referendum on EU membership if he becomes Prime Minister. In this referendum the local Labour candidate in Ipswich will campaign for Remain. However a key point here is that the Brexit option on the table wouldn’t really be Brexit. The Brexit deal presented by Jeremy Corbyn would not enable us to be able to control immigration, Jeremy Corbyn has made clear that freedom of movement will continue. This referendum would not be Brexit verus Remain, it would be Remain versus Remain. It effectively disenfranchises the majority of people in Ipswich who see the benefits of immigration but would like us to be able to control it. I find this completely unacceptable.
If I am elected as your MP I pledge to vote for the Prime Minister’s deal and to get Brexit done. Going into the New Year we will be able to establish a new system that will finally enable us to control immigration. Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party are the main threat to this.
